Zero Tax on ₹12 Lakh Income — Complete Tax Planning Strategy#

How Is ₹0 Tax Possible?#

With proper tax planning, income up to ₹12 lakh can be tax-free.

New Tax Regime Strategy#

Income: ₹12,00,000#

  • Standard Deduction: ₹75,000
  • Taxable Income: ₹11,25,000

Tax Calculation#

  • Up to ₹4,00,000: Nil
  • ₹4,00,001 - ₹8,00,000: 5% × ₹4,00,000 = ₹20,000
  • ₹8,00,001 - ₹11,25,000: 10% × ₹3,25,000 = ₹32,500
  • Total Tax: ₹52,500
  • Less: Rebate u/s 156 (taxable income is within the ₹12 lakh ceiling): ₹52,500
  • Net Tax: ₹0

No deductions or investment proof are needed here — the standard deduction plus the Section 156 rebate alone bring tax to zero for any salaried taxpayer with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh under the new regime.

Old Tax Regime Strategy#

Getting to zero tax on ₹12 lakh gross income under the old regime is harder: the Section 156 rebate here only applies if taxable income is ₹5 lakh or below, so you need at least ₹7 lakh of deductions. That typically means stacking several deductions at once — this example assumes a taxpayer with both a home loan and rented accommodation (e.g., renting near work while owning a home elsewhere), which won't apply to everyone:

DeductionAmount
Standard Deduction₹50,000
Section 123 (PPF, ELSS, LIC, EPF)₹1,50,000
Section 126 (Health Insurance)₹25,000
NPS additional contribution₹50,000
Section 24 (Home Loan Interest)₹2,00,000
HRA Exemption₹2,25,000
Total Deductions₹7,00,000
  • Taxable Income: ₹12,00,000 − ₹7,00,000 = ₹5,00,000
  • Tax on ₹5,00,000 (5% on the ₹2.5L–₹5L slab): ₹12,500
  • Less: Rebate u/s 156 (taxable income is exactly at the ₹5 lakh ceiling): ₹12,500
  • Net Tax: ₹0

If your deductions fall short of ₹7 lakh, you'll owe tax on the shortfall at 5% under the old regime — the new regime route above is far more achievable for most salaried taxpayers.

Key Deductions to Use#

  1. Section 123 (₹1.5L)

    • PPF, ELSS, LIC, FD, NPS
  2. Section 126 (₹25,000)

    • Health Insurance
  3. Section 80E (Unlimited)

    • Education Loan Interest
  4. Section 24 (₹2L)

    • Home Loan Interest
  5. Standard Deduction (₹75,000 new regime / ₹50,000 old regime)

Important Points#

  • New regime: rebate applies if taxable income is ≤ ₹12 lakh
  • Old regime: rebate applies only if taxable income is ≤ ₹5 lakh
  • Keep investment proofs
  • File ITR to claim refund

Conclusion#

Strategic planning makes zero tax possible.
